The coming forward of this new Miami Project fair, plus the build out of gallery spaces along both sides of the Las Cienega corridor in LA and the new super-sized galleries in Hollywood, CA, and the explosion of galleries in New York, indicates the market is expanding far, wide and deep. So far there are two new satellite fairs for Art Basel Miami Beach 2012: Miami Project (part of a large expansion into the art fair world by a company based in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and Context, a new fair from Art Miami, which itself has expanded its fair base into new markets. Brand new are the Select Art Fair and Miami Photo Fair that have been announced for 2012 Art Basel Miami Beach as a satellite fair on Miami Beach. Also brand new is the Miami River Art fair at the Miami Convention Center. Brand new as of July 26 is the Untitled Art Fair. Just announced. VH1 will sponsor Scope Miami 2012 (see below for details all the upcoming fairs and events). The first UR1 music festival is announced – will be on Biscayne boulevard in Miami during Miami Art Basel. UR1 is cancelled! Red Dot Art Fair Miami announces it will have 75 Solo artists booths along with 70 galleries in a 60,000 sq. ft. showcase and will have the first ArtSpot fair within its walls. Just announced is the JusMadMia fair from Spain that will be in the Soho Studios Miami. The Bas Fisher Invitational will launch a new exhibition space in downtown Miami for Baselmania 2012. SEVEN Art Fair has announced they will have their seven gallery event in a 25,000 square foot space in Miami’s Wynwood Arts District. OHWOW Miami is doing its annual IT AIN’T FAIR show in Miami Beach in a 6,000 sq. ft space.

David Lynch’s Silencio Club to pop-up at Miami’s Art Basel

David Lynch is bringing a pop-up version of his exclusive Parisian club Silencio to Miami during Art Basel in December. The Mulholland-Drive-inspired Parisian club will be recreated at the Delano South Beach hotel for the duration of the fair between the December 6 and 9.
Silencio will take over the hotel’s night club, which will be transformed into a salon atmosphere similar to the decor of the Parisian version.
Like the Parisian nightspot, access to Miami’s Silencio will be reserved for members only. Those eligible to enter will be able to enjoy music, film, art and fashion during the fair as well as lighting and cocktails similar to those offered in Paris.
Modeled by Lynch after his film Mulholland Drive, Silencio opened in Paris in 2011. The sinister cabaret decoration is inspired by the strange Club Silencio in the movie.
The club’s decoration was entirely designed by Lynch, from key features to furniture as well as small details such as the books in the bookshelves.
The venue regularly hosts movie retrospectives, concerts, art aperformances and guests DJs. Lynch is also said to oversee the cultural program for the venue.
It is not the first time a pop-up of Silencio has been brought to a major event. The exclusive club already spawned a pop-up version at the Cannes Film Festival this year and served as co-host to the Future Contemporaries Festival at the Serpentine Gallery in London.
Where Is Le Baron? Art Basel’s Best Party Goes Nomadic

The pop-up Parisian nightclub, ever THE place to party during Art Basel Miami Beach, is leaving its 5-year digs at The Delano and plotting a fresh experience for the faithful: the now-roving throwdown will come alive in a new spot each night from December 4-9, with the location kept secret until 6 p.m. every day.
That’s the magical hour at which a night’s address will be revealed through the soon-to-be-released iPhone app, “Where is Le Baron?” and the collective’s website, Twitter (#whereislebaron) and Facebook.
But the Le Baron family isn’t stopping there. To salute the travelling party, the team will gather at Free Spirits each night from 8 to 10 p.m. for a glass of Champagne. Then shuttle buses will be on hand to escort Le Baron guests from Free Spirit to each night’s location from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.
How to become a Le Baron guest? The usual Miami tricks and lists don’t apply at all, so you have about a week to become a fabulous French street artist or besties with Peaches. Good luck!
(For those who prefer to get their Baron fix in the daylight, there’ll be the Space Coast-inspired Luna Park installation on Miami Beach by the club’s official DJ duo Kolkoz. In collaboration with Galerie Emmanuel Perrotain, the pair is creating a moonscaped soccer field on which they’ll hold a tournament involving teams of artists, collectors, curators, art critics and gallerists. Heineken Is Taking Over Miami’s Art Basel

Art Basel, arguably the most important art show in the U.S., returns to South Florida at the end of the month with a series of displays from the most popular artists in the world at the historic Wynwood Art District. Heineken will jump start Miami’s Art Week with its Open Your World Mural Project, which will include some of the most talented and seasoned street artists including Estria, Prime, Chor Boogie, and Don Rimx.

On view from Thursday December 6th to Sunday December 9th, 2012 OHWOW will present the fifth and final edition of the annual group exhibition “It Ain’t Fair” that will take place concurrently with Art Basel Miami Beach. It Ain’t Fair was launched in 2008 as an innovative and divergent idea, a community platform for progressive visual art, films and performances in all media providing an alternate experience to the dozens of art fairs that take place in Miami during Art Basel Week.
Over the course of It Ain’t Fair‘s history, OHWOW has presented a wide range of work from artists in many disciplines, from Tauba Auerbach to Ashley Bickerton, Cyprien Gaillard to Clayton Patterson, Gang Gang Dance to The Gossip.
The final edition It Ain’t Fair moves from the Design District to a 6,000 square foot location on Miami Beach to accommodate a large-scale exhibition and various projects, delivering an exciting conclusion to its final edition.

Bas Fisher Invitational will offer a behind the scenes look at the city and its artistic offerings by expanding the popular, artist-led WEIRD MIAMI bus tours, which introduce locals, as well as tourists, to lesser-known places and cultural projects. Bas Fisher will invite artists to create tours and exhibitions that reflect their relationship with the city. The project also will create an interactive, online presence to enhance the experience. Bringing back WEIRD MIAMI is possible thanks to a grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, as part of the Knight Arts Challenge
The title WEIRD MIAMI is a loving ode influenced by the city slogan of Austin, Texas: “Keep Austin Weird.” In 2010, frustrated by global perceptions of Miami as a superficial Babylon where Art Basel happens to be in December, Jim Drain, Naomi Fisher, and Agatha Wara sought to expose the deep and varied year-round cultural depth of Miami by having artists become the hosts of bus tours around the city. Interrelated gallery programming will link contemporary art with the community. Betsy Hotel to Exhibit “The Lost Beatles and the Lost Rolling Stones Photographs”

The Betsy Hotel in Miami Beach will be exhibiting “The Lost Beatles and the Lost Rolling Stones Photographs”, the Bob Bonis Archive of Photographs: 1964-1966. The photographs will be on display for the first time in Florida for the upcoming Art Basel Miami Beach 2012.
Primly located in the heart of South Beach, luxury boutique hotel The Betsy will be exhibiting The Bob Bonis Archive of never-before-seen images of the Rolling Stones and The Beatles shot from 1964-1966. According to the press release, the exhibition “features 200 black and white as well as color prints curated from the close to 3000 images that comprise the collection.”
Debuting on December 3, the exhibition will be displayed along the Betsy’s public spaces such as the lobby, hallways and BLT Steak restaurant.
Bob Bonis was the tour manager for both the Rolling Stones and The Beatles first US tours and he took thousands of photographs but never made them public. Fifteen years following his death, Bonis’ son, Alex, took the images to rock n roll memorabilia specialist Larry Marion who will curate the first South Florida showcase of the images. He first had an exhibition mounted in 2011 at his NFA Gallery and then at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland among others.
The exhibition at The Betsy will be free and open to the public daily. Special tours and programming is planned for Art Basel week.
The Los Rolling Stones Photographs (2010) and The Lost Beatles Photographs (2011) were published by Harper Collins.

We’re starting our annual countdown to Art Basel Miami Beach 2012 and we’ll keep you up-to-date on all the goings on down there as fast as the info comes our way. This year’s edition of “the world’s biggest arty party” officially starts on Wednesday, December 5th, with the opening night VIP vernissage at the Miami Beach Convention Center, but don’t forget that many events are already scheduled for the beginning of that week, so you should plan on being there by the 3rd to catch everything.
Here are a few newsy tidbits and things to keep on your radar so far:
As if there weren’t enough things happening during the week, along comes the UR1 Music & Art Festival. The two-day event December 8th-9th is scheduled to take place in downtown Miami’s Bayfront Park with Kanye West, The Offspring (wut), Lou Reed, fun., Santigold, Pete Tong and tons more already confirmed. It’s the brainchild of Alex Omes, formerly one of the partners in Miami’s Ultra Music Festival, along with Emi Guerra who is known for the Masquerade Motel parties. Get your tickets here. [Image via]
The former headquarters of the Bacardi beverage company on Miami’s Biscayne Boulevard has been purchased by the National YoungArts Foundation and will be re-invented by superstar architect Frank Gehry. Don’t worry, the sites iconic landmarked buildings will remain, but the interiors will be altered and there will be a new performing arts center. [HuffPo]

The W South Beach (2201 Collins Avenue) closed their Wall nightclub for some remodeling, but it’s expected to be ready for Art Basel. Also re-vamped and now open again is Rokbar (190 Collins Avenue). The most anticipated new venture in town is Cooper Avenue (pictured above, 1661 Pennsylvania Avenue) — the gigantic all-in-one superstore, restaurant and lounge housed in a new parking garage attached to the Performing Arts Center next to the new H&M store. Did you book your plane and hotel? Better get moving, as rooms are going fast. We just checked the high and low end for rooms and discovered that 8-bed coed dorm rooms are still available on December 5th at the new Roman & Williams-designed Freehand Hotel (pictured above, 2727 Indian Creek Drive, Miami Beach) for $43 a night per bed; or why not book an oceanfront suite at the St. Regis (9703 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach) for $3,204 a night, also available on the 5th. No big deal.
Can you handle one more fair between December 5th and 9th? Fifty galleries are expected to participate in a fair called Untitled that’s being curated by Omar Lopez-Chahoud for Florida company Art Fairs Unlimited. Supposedly it’s “invite only” and will be set up in a tent on the beach designed by former Miami Art Museum director Terence Riley. The new fair has already stirred-up some controversy with the already established NADA fair. The Art Newspaperclaims that NADA is pressuring their exhibitors to not show at Untitled.
Art Miami returns to the Wynwood Arts District for the 23rd edition of their annual fair, running from December 4th to 9th. This year they’re expecting over 125 galleries to participate and, for the first time, they’ve added a new “fair-within-a-fair” with an additional 65 galleries housed in a special area called CONTEXT(). They are bringing in four, six-ton walls that feature works by UK artist Banksy and, though they aren’t for sale, they offer a good opportunity to see the artist’s work in a unique environment.
Christie‘s will host their 3rd annual exhibition during Basel/Miami with highlights from their London auction, “The Art of the Surreal.” It will be up from December 5 to 7, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. daily, at the JW Marriott Marquis (255 Biscayne Boulevard Way, Miami). It’s free and open to the public.

New York-based artist Desi Santiago is working on a huge installation for the Lords South Beach Hotel (1120 Collins Avenue) called “The Black Lords.” The artist’s work has been seen here in NYC at Deitch Projects, MoMA PS1, Mathew Marks Gallery and the Metropolitan Museum of Art and he’s know for elaborate theatrical and performance pieces. In South Beach, he plans to transform the hotel into a “ravenous black dog named Gypsy” that will tell fortunes and respond to visitors questions with sound, lasers and smoke. Perrier is sponsoring the installation and they are having a big VIP opening on Tuesday, December 4, but “Gypsy” will be on view all week from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. daily.
We just received word that Vito Acconci has been named Design Miami’s 2012 Designer of the Year. Born in the Bronx, New York, the acclaimed artist has also been commissioned to design a playground that will be built in Miami’s Design District by 2014 and that is based on “The Klein Bottle” — a structure conceived by the German mathematician Felix Klein. You’re probably noticed airplanes pulling advertising banners over your favorite beach during the summer. Now imagine what those banners would look like if you gave 15 artists free rein to design the message or the image. The Morgans Hotel Group is doing just that in a cool project called “Plane Text” and several artists have already committed to the project including: Ed Ruscha, Richard Prince, John Baldessari, Jack Pierson, Gary Simmons and Jenny Holzer. Sculptor Peter Anton is building a full-size carnival ride called “Sugar & Gomorrah” for Art Miami (Midtown Miami, 3101 NE 1st Avenue). You’ll be able to “ride into a winding tunnel that snakes through tumbling pillars and images of fire meant to evoke Sodom and Gomorrah-like destruction…and encounter a wonderland of larger-than-life sugary treats while listening to Lesley Gore’s 1965 hit ‘Sunshine, Lollipops and Rainbows.” Sugary treats + Lesley Gore = We’ll see you there. There’s a new fair called JustMad Miasetting up shop in Wynwood’s SOHO Studios this year and — besides the 30 galleries exhibiting their works — this one will include a working re-creation of Madrid’s famed San Miguel Market. There will be tons of Spanish merchants bringing their local food products to a gigantic space designed by Andres Jaque.
Louis Vuitton (170 NE 40th Street, Miami) just opened a temporary store in the Design District and they had the Los Angeles-based artist RETNAdesign a mural for the facade.For the second year, Art Basel will be using the giant 7,000-square-foot video wall on the side of the Frank Gehry-designed New World Center as a showcase for their Art Video series. There are 8 programs scheduled from December 5th to the 8th including works by Daniel Arsham, Theaster Gates, Rashaad Newsome and there will also be a special dusk-to-dawn screening of the 12-hour film “Bliss” by Ragnar Kjartanssonstarting on December 8 at 6 p.m. BYO food, beverage and blanket.

Let’s get started:Art and hip-hop collide on December 5th at the Miami Beach Convention Center. While half of the building hosts the VIP opening of Art Basel Miami Beach 2012, the other half booked a mega rap concert starring Rick Ross, Meek Mill, Wale and Machine Gun Kelly. We’re tempted to go to both, but expect total gridlock in South Beach. Tickets are available for this Maybach Music Group concert HERE. We also hear that Rakim from the ’80s rap group Eric B & Rakimis playing at The Stage (170 NE 38th Street, Miami) on Friday, December 7th.
Cool Miami gallery Locust Projects (3852 North Miami Avenue, Miami) is presenting a big installation by Chicago artist Theaster Gates called “Soul Manufacturing Corporation” that will be up from December 3 – 8 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. For the work, Gates plans to “create a factory consisting of four pavilions occupied by skilled makers who will produce ‘things’ throughout the week.” At the same time, a yoga instructor, a DJ and a reader will entertain the “makers” and the viewers. Locust Projects will be celebrating their 15th anniversary in 2013.
The Fountain Art Fair Miami (2505 North Miami Avenue. Miami) is back for their seventh go-round with over 35 exhibitors and a “visual display of installation heavy artworks” in a 25,000-square-foot warehouse. Fountain is always a blast with lots of parties and hip art, plus this year they’re hosting a spin-off of Brooklyn’s Tiki Discoparty on Saturday night.
California artist Dickson Schneider is on Kickstarter with a cool idea to give away art. He wants to raise $800 to build a portable ‘Free Art Cart’ to push through the streets of Miami and hand out 300 works of art. Schneider explains: “Participating in this project illuminates the distortions of the art world. It connects all of us who engage the project to the biggest art fair in the world. Superstar DJ Tiesto is spinning at LIV in the Fontainebleau Hotel (4441 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach) on December 8. It’s the last night of his 8-city world tour sponsored by GUESS.
The Standard Hotel Miami (40 Island Avenue, Miami Beach) is hosting a party for The Wrinkles of the City: Havana Cuba. It’s the latest book published under their Standard Press imprint run by the hotel’s creative director Claire Darrow. “Wrinkles” documents the recent collab between French artist JR and Brooklyn-based artist Jose Parla that resulted in a huge mural installation in Havana, undertaken for the Havana Biennale, for which JR and Parlá photographed and recorded 25 senior citizens who had lived through the Cuban revolution. There will also be a screening of a documentary film about the project.
ArtSpot Miami is a new fair-within-a-fair that will pop-up in the Red Dot Art Fair tent in Midtown Miami from December 5 to 9. Organized by Chicago gallerist Aldo Castillo, it will include 12 galleries in a unique environment. Per a quote from Castillo in the press release: “Given the current world market fluctuations and ever expanding nature of the art fair business model, my mission is to maximize art fair exposure and productivity to forward thinking galleries and artists in top global markets such as China and the U.S.”
Big Update: It looks like the UR1 Music and Arts Festival scheduled to take place in Miami on December 8th and 9th has been canceled due to poor ticket sales.
Fab South Beach boutique The Webster (1220 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach) is hosting several events this year including: a “Tea Party” with Stella McCartney, a breakfast for Stefanie LaCava to celebrate her new book An Extraordinary Theory of Objects, a sunset cocktail party in honor of Webster co-founder Laure Heriard Dubreuil and a launch for Pools Reflections — the latest photography book by Kelly Klein. If you didn’t make the invite list for those events, stop by the The Webster for a little shopping during the week and be sure to check out the hotel’s new cafe and bakery, Crumb on Parchment. It’s a spin-off of acclaimed Miami chef Michelle Bernstein’s Miami Design District spot.
The Standard Hotel Miami (40 Island Avenue, Miami Beach) is jam-packed with cool soirees during AB/MB. The hotel is hosting the annual SPiN Galactic Ping Pong Tournament on Saturday, December 8, from 3 to 6 p.m. and the Lazy Sunday BBQ during the afternoon of the 9th with The Hole Gallery and Andre Saraiva — who’ll sign copies of a book created for his “Andrepolis” art exhibition. Terry Richardson celebrates his latest, Terrywood, with a book signing and afterparty on December 7th and Bruce Weber will by signing copies of his new book on December 6. New York-based artist Jose Parla is opening a pop-up Cuban cafe called Cafecito Neptuno next to the Standard’s gift shop from November 26 through January 3.
Nirvana fans can look forward to a unique, three-part performance and exhibit called “KURT” at Miami’s Gusman Center for the Performing Arts (174 E Flagler Street, Miami) on December 6. The tribute to the late Kurt Cobain includes an appearance by Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore, a short film by Adarsha Benjamin and a 15-minute live version of the “Smells Like Teen Spirit” music video directed by Los Angeles choreographer Ryan Heffington. One of the week’s biggest and best parties, Basel Castle (41 NW 20th Street, Wynwood, Miami), returns on Saturday night, December 8. This year’s combo of art + music includes performances by Purity Ring, Twin Shadow, Brenmar, a Dave 1 (Chromeo) DJ set, Jacuzzi Boys, Nick Catchdubs and tons more. Works by 22 artists have been selected to be part of Art Public — an outdoor exhibit in Collins Park (Collins Avenue between 21st and 22nd Streets, Miami Beach). Produced as a collab with the Bass Museum, the works include large-scale sculpture, video, installations and live performances. It all starts with a big opening night party on December 5, open to the public from 8 to 10 p.m. with performances by Jason & Alicia Hall Moran, the Broke People’s Baroque Theater and Alex Israel. Also look for an “art-bar” installation called “Guiro” that’s open daily from 5 to midnight and is sponsored by Absolut. The oval-shaped bar was created by the artist collective Los Carpinteros.
Donna Karan hosts a book signing for Stephan Weiss: Connecting the Dots on Friday, December 7, in the beach club at the Delano Hotel (1685 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach). The book is a tribute to Karan’s late husband and proceeds from the book benefit the Urban Zen Foundation.
Steinway & Sons‘ “Pop-Up Piano” is back this year with a big fundraiser at the Perry Hotel (2377 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach) on Wednesday, December 5, 8:30 to 11:30 p.m. The party benefits Miami’s New World Symphony and includes performances by Elew, Yuna and DJ YSL and there’s also a silent auction. Swarovski collab’d with UK-based architect Asif Khan to create “Parhelia” — that’s Greek for “beside the sun.” The immersive installation incorporates over one million crystals in a structure that’s almost 20 feet tall and “explores the relationship between crystal, light, architecture and nature.” Check it out at Design/Miami from December 4 to 9 inside the Swarovski Crystal Palace.

Giant Psychic Dog to Take Over Lords South Beach During Art Basel

Art Basel is less than two months away, and the 2012 edition is on course to turn Miami into a living museum of publicly accessible art. In what may be the wildest installation of the year, Lords South Beachhotel will be turning into a massive, macabre pet. The LGBT landmark will be transformed from top to bottom into Gypsy, a giant black dog designed by artist Desi Santiago.
Think of her as Clifford’s evil cousin. The creepy canine would fit right into Miami’s current spooky Halloween theme, but she won’t make her way to South Beach until December, greeting guests and passers-by from the 3rd through the 9th. The piece, titled The Black Lords at South Beach, is said to be a multi-sensory experience, complete with giant paws over the entrance, a looming head atop the courtyard and a whipping tail in the back.
And Gypsy isn’t just a cute pooch. She’s also a prognosticator extraordinaire who’ll be telling fortunes to visiting guests. People can pose simple questions and she’ll give prophesies using her laser eyes, smoke and various sounds of her panting, running and barking.
Gypsy herself will be made up of construction netting inflatable parts, and other lo-fi ingredients.
The experience is a partnership between BOFFO, Perrier Sparkling Natural Mineral Water, and Lords’ founder Brian Gorman.

UR1 Music Festival 2012 Announces Venue: Bayfront Park

“You are music. You are unique. You are diverse. You are love. You are life. You are one.”
That’s the official mantra of Miami’s newest superambitious music fest, UR1, a two-day concert event created by Go Big Productions, AKA Ultra cofounder Alex Omes and professional party-starter Emi Guerra.
Billed as the “Your Generation Music Festival,” this mega-event has promised “EDM, pop, hip-hop, [and] rock” on multiple stages in a “Coachella-esque or Bonnaroo-esque” environment during Art Basel Miami Beach week.
It’s a pretty heavy pledge. But just now, UR1 has made the first move toward realizing its totally epic multimedia experience, announcing the venue for the fest.
According to the music festival’s press release, UR1 has chosen Bayfront Park with plans to construct festival grounds consisting of “a five-stage wonder over the 32-acre property.”
“Bayfront Park has always held a special place in my heart,” Omes says. “I have been producing events there for years. It is a ‘blank canvas’ and our team cannot wait to create the UR1 masterpiece on it.”

Miami’s New Untitled Fair Boasts “Lush Life” Curator Omar Lopez-Chahoud and a Tent by Terence Riley
Omar Lopez-Chahoud / © PMcSome might say launching a new art fair in Miami is like bringing sand to the beach. The Florida city already hosts some 20 fairs every December. Still, they keep coming, and yet another new contender is joining the fray this year. Untitled, founded by Florida-based Jeff Lawson’s company Art Fairs Unlimited, markets itself as a more relaxed, curated alternative to Miami’s sprawling mega-fairs. Instead of working with a selection committee, it hired a curator, New York-based Omar Lopez-Chahoud, to select the its 50 participating galleries.
The invitation-only fair, which runs from December 5-9, will take place inside a Terence Riley-designed tent on a stretch of beach down the street from the Miami Beach Convention Center, where the marquee Art Basel Miami Beach holds court. “The beach is Miami’s greatest public space,” Riley said in a statement. “Having the fair at the water’s edge is bringing art to the heart of the city.” (In case you’re wondering, yes, that is the same Terence Riley who served as head of the Miami Art Museum, before quitting three years ago.)
The venue serves to distinguish Untitled from Art Asia Miami, the contemporary Asian art fair Lawson’s company also runs in the midtown neighborhood. Though both fairs will take place simultaneously in conjunction with Art Basel Miami Beach, Lawson stressed that they will be very separate entities.
“Miami can be saturated,” the fair’s curator, Lopez-Chahoud told ARTINFO. “I want this fair to be different.” Lopez-Chahoud is perhaps best known for co-curating “Lush Life,” a 2010 exhibition inspired by a Richard Price novel of the same name spanning nine galleries on the Lower East Side. As he did with “Lush Life,” the curator will approach individual galleries and artists directly to negotiate their participation in Untitled. Among the confirmed names are Milan’s Frederico Lugar, which will exhibit an installation by Franklin Evans; Buenos Aires’s Nora Fisch, which is featuring Robert Buck; and New York nonprofit space Participant, Inc. Most of the galleries will present work by one or two artists.
“I like that the creative part of the project is up to one person,” Lopez-Chahoud said. Though the full list is still in formation, he is currently in negotiations with a number of galleries that have already committed to other fairs, such as Art Basel Miami Beach and NADA. (This won’t be the first time galleries have double-booked during a busy fair week — Frieze New York saw a number of dealers participating in multiple fairs.)
“I like fairs that don’t feel like a shopping mall,” Lopez-Chahoud noted. “Artists hate art fairs because their work isn’t presented properly — it isn’t contextualized. I hope they’ll feel differently about this one.”

Does Miami Beach need another art fair? We’re not sure, but we have to admit, this one sounds good: The Untitled art fair is launching its inaugural edition down in Miami this winter (December 5–9), and it will be curated. Fifty international galleries and nonprofits will choose their artists and artworks in conversation with curator Omar Lopez-Chahoud, who organized the sprawling, nine-gallery, Lower East Side exhibition Lush Life in 2010. The ultimate goal of Untitled art fair, according to the press release, is “a cogent and cohesive presentation that places emphasis on diversity and conceptual rigor.” That does sound like a nice change from your average shopping mall art fair.
Untitled, which will take place in a commissioned pavilion designed by architecture firm K/R, released a partial list of some of the participating galleries this week. Standout names include New York’s Art in General and Dodge Gallery, which will be showing Jason Middlebrook; Milan’s Federico Luger, showing Franklin Evans; and LA’s Steve Turner, showing Parker Ito. We know everyone already has too much to see and do in Miami Beach, but this new fair might be worth a look.

The inaugural Miami Project, a new contemporary and modern art fair will debut December 4-9, 2012 in Miami’s Midtown / Wynwood Art District.
Miami Project will consist of presentations by 65 galleries from around the world selected based on the strength and relevance of their programs. This year’s show will be housed in a comfortable and centrally located modular structure located at NE 1st Avenue & NE 30th Street.
The Miami Project begins with a dedication to quality, both in content and production. The fair will consist of presentations by galleries that promote their artists and estates through regular gallery exhibitions, museum shows and participation in major fairs. The physical production of Miami Project will mirror the quality of the work shown. Nothing foreshadows the end of summer like news trickling in about Art Basel Miami Beach. Today’s announcement that the Scope Art Show has struck a sponsorship deal with cable network VH1 was just such news, and it gave us a slight shiver. Scope, the satellite art fair that will run concurrently with ABMB from Dec. 4 to 9, will make its biggest splash to date, occupying a 100,000-square-foot pavilion in midtown Miami, replete with a VH1 Outdoor Lounge for post-fair frolicking.
Known for being an incubator of emerging contemporary art galleries at over 45 art fairs over the past decade, Scope will present 20 innovative Breeder Program galleries along with 85 established international exhibitors. Scope’s Breeder Program includes some distinguished alumni, with Peres Projects, Bischoff/ Weiss and Taxter Spengemann among them.
The VH1 sponsorship will involve a series of collaborations on-site in Miami, online and on-air, and VH1 will present the Scope Miami Official Party with musical guests from VH1′s “You Oughta Know” franchise, which helped launch the careers of Amy Winehouse, Regina Spektor and James Blunt. The party will also feature visual work co-curated by SCOPE & VH1.

See large-scale brightly-colored, recyclable plastic alligators, sea turtles, frogs and marsh bunnies crawling up and down and in and around Downtown Miami’s historic Freedom Tower at MDC during Miami Art Week. These unique native South Floridian creatures are part of FOREVERGLADES, an environmentally-minded public installation by William Sweetlove and other members of Cracking Art Group. The animals were selected by the participating artists because of the important role each species plays in the development and history of the local landscape. The exhibition aims to establish a locally conscious perspective focusing on environmental protection, sustainability and advocacy of South Florida’s National Parks and Preserves. Hosted by Miami Dade College’s Museum of Art + Design, in collaboration with Galleria Ca’ D’Oro, the exhibition is generously underwritten by famed Swiss watchmaker Girard-Perregaux. Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden will present the inaugural exhibition, Design at Fairchild: Sitting Naturally that opens during Art Basel Miami Beach Week. Sitting Naturally showcases a diverse collection of new works by seven internationally renowned artists commissioned by the Cristina Grajales Gallery in New York City. Inspired by Fairchild’s lush, tropical landscape, each artist has created two sculptures for sitting to be exhibited amid the backdrop of exotic palms, cycads, flowering trees, vines, orchids and other foliage. The artists are Gael Appler, Sam Baron, Pedro Barrail, Christophe Côme, Michele Oka Doner, Sebastian Errazuriz and John Paul Philippe. On view concurrently with Sitting Naturally will be Pardo on the Allée, an installation by Havana-born Jorge Pardo. Fairchild Garden will be illuminated with hundreds of lamps by Pardo set along the Garden’s glorious tree-lined paths. These delightful permutations of red, orange, and white powder-coated steel are reminiscent of blooming flowers romantically dangling from trees. Adding to Fairchild’s 2012-13 art program will be Chamberlain at Fairchild, highlighting four of John Chamberlain’s sculptures produced from 2008 to 2010. Up to fifteen feet high, the works are constructed from silver, green, and copper-colored industrial aluminum, which has been looped and flexed into quirky biomorphic forms that make an interesting correlation with the lush plant life at Fairchild Garden. World Erotic Art Museum, in association with the Museum dr Moderne Salzburg, Austria, will present Helmut Newton: A Liberating Focus during Art Basel Miami Beach. The exhibition, the first Miami solo show of the world famous photo/artist, will feature major works from 1982-2000. Berlin-born in 1920 to Jewish parents, Newton purchased his first camera at age 12. Following the infamous “Kristallnacht,” his family was briefly interned in a concentration camp. His parents fled to South America while Helmut, 18, secured a passport leaving Germany in December, 1938. In Trieste, along with 200 others escaping the Nazis, Newton boarded a ship for China, landed in Singapore and began an odyssey which took him to Sydney, Australia in 1940, to London in 1945 and ultimately to Paris. It was in Paris that he worked at French Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar creating what was to become a lifelong career as a photo/artist. The legendary iconic photographer shook off all constraints via his broad view of capturing the provocative worlds of beauty, eroticism, humor, money, power and, at times, violence. An innovative, larger-than-life public art installation by The New York Times “Artist in the Moment,” Desi Santiago will literally use Lords South Beach as a canvas for the work. This building-sized commission stands out in the traditional art deco neighborhood, shifting the venue to a wicked Wonderland that will make you stop and wonder! Lords South Beach will be transformed into a ravenous black dog named Gypsy, an image that often appears throughout Santiago’s work. Upon close inspection, you’ll find an assemblage of low-fi materials such as construction netting and inflatable parts. A looming head overlooks the courtyard, menacing paws flank the entrance, and a whipping tail finds its way in the back. This eerie multi-sensory ritual takes over, evoking the dark and macabre subculture Santiago is known for. If you dare, Gypsy will tell your fortune. Ask a simple question, and Gypsy will respond through her laser eyes, smoke, and sounds of her running, panting, and barking. Primary Projects will host a two-part, two-venue initiative during Miami Art Week. Raneytown, a solo exhibit by Miami native, New York-based artist Rebeca Raney will metamorphose the gallery into a rainbow-coated site. Four New World School of the Arts’ visual artists will participate in Hotbed Miami, an annual exhibition that this year will change its venue to the Deauville Beach Resort. See the work of Graffiti’s Undisputed King, “Blade” (Steve Ogburn). Known as The King of Trains for having left his moniker on some 5,000 NYC subway trains, Blade is being pursued by art collectors worldwide instead of transit police. He’s the only living person since Andy Warhol who made the cover of a Sotheby’s auction catalog, and he has exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art in L.A. and the Brooklyn Museum. He painted his last train in 1984. The central piece of the show by Palanza brings together work by video artist Demet Taspinar and poet Elizabeth Branfield. The exhibition offers a different perspective of the ocean as an environment to exist in, where air space becomes water space that viewers walk through. Palanza’s endeavor was inspired by the whales that inhabit the waters surrounding her home in Provincetown, Massachusetts. A portion of sales from this show will benefit the Provincetown Center of Coastal Studies.

The inaugural UR1 Music & Art Festival, featuring Kanye West, The Offspring and Lou Reed, will launch during Miami Art Week, blending music with world-class artists across multiple genres and generations. Thirty-four established and emerging contemporary and modern artists will explore performance, film, new media, sculpture, street art, painting and more with 30 site-specific installations in Bayfront Park. The 32-acre landscape designed by American sculptor Isamu Noguchi was revamped in the early 80s to introduce Miami as the gateway to the Americas. His vision for Bayfront Park as a place for the people is central to the concept of UR1 Festival. World renowned artists will pay tribute to music and art, including pop artist Russell Young paying tribute to legendary musicians with a major exhibition of works; Warhol superstar Ultra Violet lighting up the Miami sky with one of the world’s most powerful laser beams creating a bridge of light from the park to the Miami Beach Convention Center in her tribute to Noguchi’s Tower of Light; pop art photographer William John Kennedy’s tribute to Warhol and Indiana with a video montage and signature photographs; conceptional pop artist David Datuna’s tribute to British and American talent with alluring multi-media constructions; and sculptor Gino Miles’ nod to modernism with monumental works. A pseudo “Container Village,” consisting of large shipping containers in the northwest area of Bayfront Park, will serve as screening/exhibition studios as an aural, visual and spatial platform for the work. Cost to attend is $149 for a two-day all-access pass, which includes entrance to art fairgrounds and performances, rain or shine. Open to all ages.

In celebration of Art Basel Miami Beach, The Patricia and Phillip Frost Art Museum at FIU will host Breakfast in the Park, attended by art enthusiasts, patrons, collectors, gallery owners and artists from around the world. The 9th annual Breakfast in the Park features internationally renowned artist Albert Paley, an active artist for over 40 years and the first metal sculptor to receive the coveted Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Institute of Architects, the AIA’s highest award to a non-architect. Paley holds an Endowed Chair at the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, New York and is the recipient of three Honorary Doctorates in Fine Art. Commissioned by both public and private corporations, Paley has completed more than 50 site-specific works. His mission is to restore the organic roots of sculpture. Infused with the rhythmic fluidity of Art Nouveau, Paley’s sculptures have been called mysterious, seductive and spirited. They are technologically ingenious and emotionally demanding. Giorgio Armani has opened its third home furnishing store in the U.S. in Miami’s Design District.
French luxury house Hermes is set to open its doors in Miami’s Design District. The new store boasts 20,000 sq. ft. and offers customers double the space to shop as the brand’s former location at Miami’s Bal Harbour Shops.
President and CEO of HERMES U.S.A. Robert Chavez says the new flagship will include a larger space dedicated to men’s collections and shoes. Fine jewels, watches and home collections, including furniture, will also be included in the new and improved flagship store.
Chavez is confident the move will prompt other luxury brands to make the Design District their home as the Midtown adjacent neighborhood has become one of Miami’s hautest shopping destinations.

…(Miami Design District) developer Craig Robins has confirmed the long-anticipated deal with parent company Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy to bring another 11 brands beyond its namesake company to the burgeoning area on the northern fringes of downtown Miami. They include Christian Dior, Fendi, Bulgari, Pucci, De Beers, Celine and Marc by Marc Jacobs.
Robins also officially announced the opening of Cartier, which will be one of 10 Richemont brands opening in the Design District. Other new tenants: Tom Ford, Zegna and Burberry, according to Robins.

UR1 Music Festival is going to try to shake up the concept of what a festival can be when it debuts this December 8-9 in Miami.
The brain child of Alex Omes and Emi Guerra of GO BIG Productions, the two-day music and arts festival will coincide with the 11th annual Art Basel Miami Beach, a prestigious art show, and will be tapping into the creativity of the weekend to build a limitless event that will freely combine music, art and design with DJs, live music, and performance and visual artists.
“It is time the bar was raised. We are not putting up a stage for fans to stare at, UR1 will be a 4D experience,” said Omes, who also co-founded Ultra Music Festival, in a statement. “We have some of the most creative musicians and artists in the world participating and have given them carte blanche so come up with their “dream” performance.”
UR1 stands for Your Generation Music Festival, and it will be attempting to reach the pinnacle of contemporary artistic expression through its loose parameters.

Major Bill Viola Exhibition Making Only U.S. Stop at MoCA Miami, Opening During Basel
The major Bill Viola solo show “Bill Viola: Liber Insualrum,” which was organized by Sala de Arte Contemporaneo del Gobierno de Canarias in Tenerife, will have its only presentation in the U.S. at the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami, where it will open in December during Art Basel Miami Beach.
The exhibition was inspired by the Florentine ecclesiastic Cristoforo Buondelmonti’s 15th century document “The Book of Islands of the Archipelago,” and “will explore themes of spiritual isolation in a transforming global landscape,” according to an exhibition announcement. Appropriately, the show includes one of the best-known of Viola’s hypnotic super-slow-motion high-definition videos, “The Crossing,” which features a single human figure move across several screens before being inundated with fire and water.
Viola’s early work was recently featured in a solo show at the Georgia Museum of Art in Atlanta that closed in February, and in 2010 he had a solo show at the Saint Louis Art Museum. But this will mark the video artist’s first major retrospective in his home country since the Whitney organized “Bill Viola: A 25-Year Survey” in 1997, which subsequently traveled to LACMA, SFMOMA, the Art Institute of Chicago, Amsterdam’s Stedelijk Museum, and Frankfurt’s Museum für Moderne Kunst. “Bill Viola: Liber Insualrum” will open December 5 at MoCA North Miami and continue through March 10, 2013.
